พุทธวจนในธรรมบท
The Buddha’s words in the Dhammapada
หมวดดอกไม้ – THE FLOWERS

1. โก อิมํ ปฐวึ วิเชสฺสติ
ยมโลกญฺจ อิมํ สเทวกํ
โก ธมฺมปทํ สุเทสิตํ
กุสโล ปุปฺผมิว ปเจสฺสติ ฯฯ

ใครจักครองแผ่นดินนี้
พร้อมทั้งยมโลก และเทวโลก
ใครจักเลือกเฟ้นพระธรรมบท
ที่ทรงแสดงไว้ดีแล้ว
เหมือนนายมาลาการผู้ฉลาด
เลือกเก็บดอกไม้

Who will conquer this earth(life)
With Yama’s realm and with celestial world?
Who will investigate the well-taught Dhamma-Verses
As a skilful garland-maker plucks flowers?

2. เสโข ปฐวึ วิเชสฺสติ
ยมโลกญฺจ อิมํ สเทวกํ
เสโข ธมฺมปทํ สุเทสิตํ
กุสโล ปุปฺผมิว ปเจสฺสติ ฯฯ

พระเสขะจักครองแผ่นดินนี้
พร้อมทั้งยมดลกและเทวโลก
พระเสขะจักเลือกเฟ้นพระธรรมบท
ที่ทรงแสดงไว้ดีแล้ว
เหมือนนายมาลาการผู้ฉลาด
เลือกเก็บดอกไม้

A learner(sekha) will conquer this earth
With Yama’s realm and with celestial world.
He will investigate the well-taught Dhamma-Verses
As a skilful garland-maker plucks flower.

3. เผณูปมํ กายมิทํ วิทิตฺวา
มรีจิกมฺมํ อภิสมฺพุธาโน
เฉตฺวาน มารสฺส ปปุปฺผกานิ
อทสฺสนํ มจฺจุราชสฺส คจฺเฉ ฯฯ

เมี่อรู้ว่าร่างกายนี้แตกสลายง่าย และว่างเปล่า
เช่นเดียวกับฟองน้ำ และพยับแดด
ก็ควรทำลายบุษปศรของกามเทพ
ไปให้พ้นทัศนวิสัยของมัจจุราชเสีย

Perciving this body to be similar unto foam
And comprehending its mirage-nature,
One should destroy the flower-tipped arrows of Love
And pass beyond the sight of the King of Death.

4. ปุปฺผานิ เหว ปจนนฺตํ
พิยาสตฺตมนสํ นรํ
สุตฺตํ คามํ มโหโฆว
มจฺจุ อาทาย คจฺฉติ ฯฯ

มฤตยูฉุดคร่าคนผู้มัวเก็บดอกไม้(กามคุณ)
มีใจเกี่ยวข้องอยู่ในกามคุณไป
เหมือนห้วงน้ำใหญ่หลากมา
พัดพาเอาชาวบ้านผู้หลับไหลไป

He who gathers flowers of sensual pleasure,
Whose mind is distracted-
Death carries him off
As the great flood a sleeping village.

5. ปุปฺผานิ เหว ปจินนฺตํ
พฺยาสตฺตมนสํ นรํ
อติตฺตํเยว กาเมสุ
อนฺตโก กุรุเต วสํ ฯฯ

ผู้ที่มัวเก็บดอกไม้(กามคุณ)เพลินอยู่
มีจิตใจข้องอยู่แต่ในกามคุณไม่รู้จักอิ่ม
มักตกอยู่ในอำนาจมฤตยู

He who gathers flowers of sensual pleasures,
Whose mind is distracted
And who is insatiate in desire-
Him death brings under its sway.

6. ยถาปิ ภมโร ปุปฺผํ
วณฺณคนฺธํ อเหฐยํ
ปเลติ รสมาทาย
เอวํ คาเม มุนี จเร ฯฯ

มุนีพึงจาริกไปในเขตคาม
ไม่ทำลายศรัทธาและโภตะของชาวบ้าน
ดุจภมรดูดรสหวานของบุปผชาติแล้วจากไป
ไม่ให้สีและกลิ่นชอกช้ำ

As a bee takes honey from the flowers,
Leaving it colour and fragrance unharmed,
So should the sage wander in the village.

7. น ปเรสํ วิโลมานิ
น ปเรสํ กตากตํ
อตฺตนาว อเวกฺเขยฺย
กตานิ อกตานิ จ ฯฯ

ไม่ควรแส่หาความผิดผู้อื่น
หรือธุระที่เขาทำแล้วหรือยังไม่ทำ
ควรตรวจดูเฉพาะกิจ
ที่ตนทำหรือยังไม่ทำเท่านั้น

Pay not attention to the faults of others,
Things done or left undone by others,
Consider only what by oneself
Is done or left undone.

8. ยถาปิ รุจิรํ ปุปฺผํ
วณฺณวนิตํ อคนฺธกํ
เอวํ สุภาสิตา วาจา
อผลา โหติ อกุพฺพโต ฯฯ

วาจาสุภาสิต
ของผู้ทำไม่ได้ตามพูด
ย่อมไม่มีประโยขน์อะไร
ดุจดอกไม้สีสวย แต่ไร้กลิ่น

As a flower that is lovely
And colourful,but scentless,
Even so fruitless is the well-spoken word
Of one who follows it not.

9. ยถาปิ รุจิรํ ปุปฺผํ
วณฺณวนฺตํ สคนฺธกํ
เอวํ สุภาสิตา วาจา
สผลา โหติ สุกุพฺพโต ฯฯ

วาจาสุภาษิต
ของผู้ทำได้ตามพูด
ย่อมอำนวยผลดี
ดุจดอกไม้สีสวยและมีกลิ่นหอม

As a flower that is lovely,
Colourful and fragrant,
Even so fruitful is the well-spoken word
Of one who practises it.

10. ยถาปิ ปุปฺผราสิมฺหา
กยิรา มาลาคุเณ พหู
เอวํ ชาเตน มจฺเจน
กตฺตพฺพํ กุสลํ พหุํ ฯฯ

เมื่อเกิดมาแล้วจะต้องตาย
ก็ควรสร้างบุญกุศลไว้ให้มาก
เหมือนนายมาลาการร้อยพวงมาลัย
เป็นจำนวนมากจากกองดอกไม้

As from a heap of flowers
Many kinds of garlands can be made,
So many good deeds should be done
By one born a mortal.

11. น ปุปฺผคนโธ ปฏิวาตเมติ
น จนฺทนํ ตครมลฺลิกา วา
สตญฺจ คนฺโธ ปฏิวาตเมติ
สพฺพา ทิสา สปฺปุริโส ปวายติ ฯฯ

กลิ่นปุปผชาติ ก้หอมทวนลมไม่ได้
กลิ่นจันทน์ กฤษณา หรือดอกมะลิ
ก็หอมทวนลมไม่ได้
แต่กลิ่นสัตบุรุษ หอมทวนลมไม่ได้
สัตบุรุษ ย่อมหอมฟุ้งขจรไปทั่วทุกทิศ

The perfume of flower blows not againts the wind,
Nor does the fragrance of sandal-wood, Tagara andjasmine,
But the fragrance of the virtuous blows against the wind
The virtuous man pervades all directions.

12. จนฺทนํ ตครํ วาปิ
อุปฺปลํ อถ วสฺสิกี
เอเตสํ คนฺธชาตานํ
สีลคนฺดธ อนุตฺตโร ฯฯ

กลิ่นศีล หอมยิ่งกว่า
ของหอมเหล่านี้ คือ
จันทน์ กฤษณา
ดอกอุบล และ กะลำพัก

Sandal -wood, Tagara,
lotus and wild jasmine-
Of all these kinds of fragrance,
The fragrance of virtue is by far the best.

13. อปฺปมตฺโต อยํ คนฺโธ
ยายํ ตครจนฺทนี
โย จ สีลวตํ คนฺโธ
วาติ เทเวสุ อุตฺตโม ฯฯ

กฤษณา หรือจันทน์ มีกลิ่นหอมน้อยนัก
แต่กลิ่นหอมของท่านผู้ทรงศีลประเสริฐนัก
หอมฟุ้งกระทั่งถึงทวยเทพยดา

Little is the fragrance of Tagara
And that of sandal-wood,
But the fragrance of virtue is excellent
And blows even among the devas.

14. เตสํ สมฺปนฺนสีลานํ
อปฺปมาทวิหารินี
สมฺมทญฺญา วิมุตฺตานํ
มาโร มคฺคํ น วินฺทติ ฯฯ

มารย่อมค้นไม่พบวิถีทาง
ของผู้ทรงศีลผู้อยู่ด้วยความไม่ประมาท
ผู้หลุดพ้นจากอาสวกิเลส เพราะรู้ชอบ

Of those who possess these virtues,
Who live without negligence,
Who are freed by perfect knowledge-
Mara finds not their way.

15. ยถา สงฺการธานสฺมึ
อุชุฌิตสฺมึ มหาปเถ
ปทุมํ ตตฺถ ชาเยถ
สุจิคนฺธํ มโนรมํ ฯฯ

ดอกบัว มีกลิ่นหอม รื่นรมย์ใจ
เกิดบนสิ่งปฏิกูล
ที่เขาทิ้งไว้ไกล้ทางใหญ่ ฉ้นใด

Just as on a heap of rubbish
Thrown u[on the highway
Grows the lotus sweetly fragrant
And delighting the heart.

16. เอวํ สงฺการภูเตสุ
อนฺธภูเต ปุถุชฺชเน
อติดรจติ ปญฺญาย
สมฺมาสมิพุทฺธสาวโก ฯฯ

ท่ามกลางหมู่ปุถุชน ผู้โง่เขลา
ผู้เป็นเสมือนสิ่งปฏิกูล
พระสาวกของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า
ย่อมรุ่งเรืองด้วยปัญญา ฉันนั้น

Even so among those blinded mortals
Who are like rubbish,
The disciple or the Fully Enligtened one
Shines with exceeding glory by his wisdom.
